Respect the Day this ANZAC Day 2022
ANZAC Day is not just a public holiday with an excuse to drink to excess and engage in antisocial behaviour. ANZAC Day is an opportunity to reflect on how lucky we are, the sacrifices that have been made for us to live in a free and fair nation and to enjoy the company of our friends and family. It is a time to reflect on the importance of peace. Sharing a beer and playing a game of two up is one of the many traditions Australia has on ANZAC Day, but it is not the sole purpose of this important and sacred day.
In 2019, the RSL&SCA launched a campaign called Respect the Day to remind people of the special significance of ANZAC Day and to encourage Australians to reflect on how we should behave on this sacred day. In the lead up to ANZAC Day, we had over 40+ Clubs involved in this campaign across NSW, with Clubs from QLD getting involved in the campaign!
Respect the Day is also designed to educate younger people and newer Australians about the significance of ANZAC Day, and the reasons it is held. Our goal with the campaign is to increase understanding, particularly among younger people and recent Australians, of the purpose and focus of ANZAC Day.
There are four sub-themes to this campaign are:
- Celebrate Our Freedoms
- Remember their Sacrifice
- Honour Our Traditions
- Look After Your Mates
Our concept of the campaign this ANZAC Day is to complement the programs of activities and services that Sub-branches and RSL Clubs conduct in the lead up to, and on Anzac Day.
We want to attract even greater numbers to services and marches after COVID has impacted the last two years, and we want good, positive behaviour by younger people, treating veterans with respect, understanding that their freedoms and lifestyle were made possible by the bravery and sacrifice of all who served in uniform to defend our country and its values.
We hope that Clubs and sub-branches will work together in local communities to run our Respect the Day video we will can provide, to run in your club and on social media platforms.
